About Cerro Nutibara

Cerro Nutibara is an iconic natural and cultural landmark in the heart of Medellín, Colombia. As one of the city's largest "green islands," it not only preserves rich ecological resources but is also globally renowned for the Pueblito Paisa and the open-air sculpture park at its summit. As a public asset, the attraction is currently managed and maintained by the Medellín City Government (Alcaldía de Medellín), dedicated to providing a free and open space for natural recreation and cultural education for both locals and international visitors.

Explore the Hill

🏛️ Stroll through Pueblito Paisa

Built in 1978, this is a perfect 1:1 replica of a traditional early 20th-century town in the Antioquia region of Colombia. Walk along the cobblestone square, visit the traditional church, town hall, and fountain, taste an authentic Bandeja Paisa, and experience the original Colombian charm.

🎨 Immerse in the Modern Sculpture Park

As a sanctuary of open-air art, modern sculptures created by renowned domestic and international artists are scattered across the hill. The geometric lines of the art and the lush natural vegetation achieve a perfect balance here.

🌆 360° Panoramic City Viewpoint

As one of the highest points in urban Medellín, it is a paradise for photography enthusiasts. During the day, the red-brick buildings spread across the valley like building blocks; at dusk, you will witness the breathtaking Andean sunset and the lighting of thousands of homes.

A Living Fossil of Nature and Culture: Deep Dive

🌿

Geology & Ecology: An Urban "Green Island"

Tectonic Origin: The Erosion-Resistant Andean Inselberg

Geologically, Cerro Nutibara is a typical Inselberg. The hill is mainly composed of Cretaceous amphibolite and diorite, which are extremely hard. Over millions of years, softer surrounding rocks eroded away, leaving this core standing proudly.

Ecological Value: The Aburrá Valley Sanctuary

Covered with secondary evergreen broadleaf forests, including the native Guayacán tree. It is home to over 40 recorded bird species, tropical squirrels, and various amphibians, forming an invaluable ecological corridor within the city.

🏛️

Architecture & Cultural Anthropology: Semiotics of Pueblito Paisa

What is "Cultura Paisa"?

Paisa culture blends traits from Spanish colonizers, Basque immigrants, and local indigenous people, forming a unique dialect, cohesive family values, and an iconic architectural style.

A 1:1 Time Capsule

The central square features a typical Spanish grid layout; the traditional church replicates colonial white walls and red tiles; the barbershop, pharmacy, and school display real late-19th-century artifacts, educating the public about pre-industrial daily life.

Contemporary Art History: Breaking Museum Walls

Academic Guide to Core Exhibits

"Signos en el espacio" (Signs in Space) by Carlos Rojas uses weathering steel to explore the conflict and symbiosis of geometry and nature. "La de la tercera edad" (Old Age) uses granite and metal to metaphorically represent the resilience of life.

Art Movements

The works cover Constructivism and Minimalism. They eschew figurative forms, using materials and spatial geometry to guide viewers in contemplating the relationship between humanity, art, and the hill itself.

Historical Origins: From Indigenous Totems to Public Park

Pre-Columbian Era

The Legend of Cacique Nutibara

Colonial & Republican Eras: Changes in Ownership

📍 Land Privatization

Early on, it was named Morro Marcela de la Parra after its female owner. In the 19th century, it was owned by the Cadavid family (Morro de los Cadavides) and served mainly as a pasture and stone quarry.

Pueblito Paisa Completed

📍 Architectural Experiment

Open-Air Sculpture Park

📍 Pioneering Art Experiment

Pushed by the Medellín Museum of Modern Art (MAMM), Cerro Nutibara welcomed permanent sculptures by 11 top international and local artists. It was an early Latin American attempt to combine avant-garde abstract art with natural public spaces.

💡 Hidden Easter Egg: Did You Know?

Some of the wood, red tiles, doors, and windows used in the construction of Pueblito Paisa are actually authentic historical artifacts rescued and transported from the old town of El Peñol before it was flooded to build the Peñol-Guatapé reservoir!
